About us

Representing the next generation giant optical/infrared astronomical telescope, Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) will be buit on the top of Mauna Kea, Hawaii. It will be the pioneer instrument for astronomy in the next few decades. With the joint efforts of its collaborating countries, the project is an unprecedented global partnership. That partnership includes:

· Caltech and the University of California;

· National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), and under its leadership the research institutes and association of universities;

· Association of Canadian Universities for Research in Astronomy (ACURA);

· National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ); and

· Department of Science and Technology (DST) of India.

Since 2009, major progress has been achieved during this international collaboration and China has become an indispensable role in the project: The TMT-China science team is formed and developed. Talented technicians, scientists and managers are well trained. This funding also sponsored tentative collaborations of several CAS institutes with TMT. All the institutes are motivated and start taking critical roles in the development of TMT key technologies with their own fundings. According to the value of “in-kind” contribution, China will have corresponding share of observation time by the time TMT was constructed. This will initiate a new era for Chinese astronomers to use the most advanced telescope in searching for ground-breaking science discovery. The scientific reach of the project will focus not only on Chinese astronomical community, but also on human capital, the talent and curiosity of much of the global community.
